On Wednesday, Forbes magazine said that reality TV star Kylie Jenner was on track to be the youngest self made billionaire.
But can all of Kylie’s fortune be attributed to her and her alone?
When Kim’s infamous sex tape was leaked and she started the now 15 season long reality TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kylie was only 10 years old. She has essentially grown up in the public eye, meaning that her name alone is enough to push her ahead in any industry.
Her name recognition coupled with her family’s extreme wealth gave Kylie a headstart that undoubtedly excelled her own path to success.
Kylie’s parents, Caitlyn and Kris Jenner, have a collective net worth of 160 million dollars.
Any child with parents that wealthy is destined to do better than someone coming from an average household.
When children come from wealthier homes, they are predisposed to success. In a study conducted by the Pell Institute, it was statistically proven that kids from higher income families are more likely to go to and graduate college than those from lower income families. Since the job market vastly favors those with a bachelor’s degree or higher, there’s a plain correlation between coming from a wealthy home and succeeding in the job market.
Kylie has made her millions from launching her own line of cosmetics through her own brand, Kylie Cosmetics. The brand started just selling lip kits, which consisted of lip liners and matte lipsticks, so that customers could achieve the same large lip look that Kylie has become known for. The brand has now expanded to include a variety of makeup products, including concealers and highlighters.
However, despite the growing success of Kylie Cosmetics, the company has received many negative reviews from beauty gurus and buyers across the country.
Many claim that the lip kits in particular dry their lips, flake off, and don’t stay throughout the day. In addition, when the lip kits first debuted, there were many complications with shipping and handling. There were dozens of reports of stolen, lost, or damaged packages and products.
Yet so many people keep buying these very expensive products (one lip kit starts at $29), despite the poor quality and shipping complications. But why?
The answer is simple: for the name.
Once again, Kylie’s name propels her forward in the cosmetic industry. It’s unrealistic to think that any other cosmetic company would not only be able to survive, but prosper, for as long as Kylie Cosmetics has been able to given the same circumstances.
But fans don’t mind paying exuberant amounts of money for cheaply made products and putting up with delivery issues if it means getting to have the Kylie Jenner name smeared across their lips.
The idea that Kylie Jenner has made her way to one of America’s youngest billionaires by herself is simply ignorant. Given the quality issues plaguing her company, it’s clear to see that a big reason why she’s been able to find success comes from her family name and family fortune.
