We need to start by stating the obvious: there are so many different colors of people in this world. So why does it feel like most makeup companies only seem to offer the same few options for a foundation color: ivory, tan, medium and ebony? Well, my friends, I have compiled a list of the most diverse, cruelty-free brands for all of your skin covering needs!
- (Cover FX) Cover FX Natural Finish (40 Shades) – $40
This foundation is number one on the list because it’s is 100% vegan, cruelty-free AND has the most diversity as far as skin tones go! It’s water-based formula creates the perfect dewy finish. However, if you have combination or oily skin, it’s best to stay away from this one, as most of the reviews state it can leave you looking a bit greasy if it’s used as your primary foundation.
- (Kat Von D) Kat Von D Lock It Foundation (30 Shades) – $35
Coming in at number two is Kat Von D’s 100% vegan, cruelty-free, full coverage HD foundation that has no parabens or sulfates! On the plus side, this foundation will stay ALL DAY and blend very easily, but if you’ve got dry skin it seems this will only exacerbate your issue, so buyer beware!
- (Tarte) Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Full Coverage Foundation (24 Shades) – $39
Now this foundation is incredible. No matter what skin type you have, this foundation uses their very own “skin smart technology” which automatically adjusts to your own skin! 100% vegan, hypoallergenic, SPF 15, paraben AND sulfate free. This foundation really has it all. The complaint most people seem to have is how expensive it is. The more limited number of shades in which this foundation is available is all that kept it from the top spot on this list.
- (Tarte) Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation (21 Shades) – $39
Hydrating 20% water formula, hypoallergenic and SPF 15! Be aware, though, that this foundation may require some trial and error. The reviews are stuck between whether or not it’s great or bad for oily skin, so your best bet would probably be to get a free sample from Sephora (or wherever) and see how you like it before purchasing! Remember, everyone’s skin is different!
- (NYX) Total Control Drop Foundation (24 Shades) – $14
First of all, NYX is an incredible and affordable brand. Second, this foundation just proves why they are slowly climbing into every makeup lover’s “MUST HAVE” bag. This foundation is lightweight, blends well and has good pigmentation. Totally worth your money. Best for normal, combination or oily skin.
- (Urban Decay) All Nighter Liquid Foundation (24 Shades) – $40
This oil-free, matte finish foundation will definitely give you more coverage than the “Naked Weightless” foundation I mentioned earlier. This one was specifically designed to to diffuse light and blur pores. Most complaints claim it oxidizes, so it’s probably best to try some out on your wrist and shop around before buying it.
- (KRYOLAN) HD MICRO FOUNDATION SMOOTHING FLUID (21 Shades) – $45
Keep in mind when buying this foundation, it is made primarily for TV/Film. That being said, this foundation will cover basically every single pore on your face without rendering your face unable to breathe. So as long as you don’t intend to use it as a “day time light foundation” it’s great! Dry skin recommended for this foundation!
- (Milani) Conceal + Perfect 2-in-1 Foundation + Concealer (19 Shades) – $10 Kill two birds with one stone! (Figuratively, of course) This foundation is also a concealer! It combats under-eye circles and hard-to-cover pimples with little to no effort! And for that price? You genuinely cannot go wrong.
- (Urban Decay) Naked Weightless Foundation (26 Shades) – $40
Okay, so maybe I’m biased, but this foundation was just not for me. I have combination skin and found that this foundation was just way too sheer, but for those who don’t need much coverage, I’m sure this foundation would be perfect! It goes on smooth and is easy to blend. It’s oil-free and if a dewy appearance is your kind of thing, this would be the way to go!
- (Too Faced) Born This Way (24 Shades) – $39
This foundation is for everyone! Oily, dry, combination, you name it… this foundation will cover it. It is infused with coconut water (YUM) to help retain your skin’s natural moisture. I would recommend using a primer with it because some reviews claim it can get a little patchy without the use of a base coat.
