The Trump dynasty continues to shock the world with their overwhelming political influence, even though they are unelected officials. At the G20 summit, one of the most prestigious meetings of world leaders, Ivanka Trump sat in for her father. She, inexperienced in politics, discussed topics such as African development, with world leaders such as Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany. “This is strange,” said Michael McFaul, the United States Ambassador to Russia under President Barack Obama speaking on someone sitting in for a president in such an important meeting.
“The history is that it is very common for the whole family to become involved in the White House,” said Doug Wead, who researched presidential children for the first President Bush and later wrote a book. “The Trumps are not as good at hiding the family involvement as others, but it is there for almost all of the presidents with adult children.”
This influence the entire family has on President Trump has never been seen in the past by another sitting President. With the fall of Steve Bannon, Trump is now relying most heavily on daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Jared Kushner though has a surprisingly large role in the White House currently as compared to wife Ivanka who has an unpaid role as assistant to the President. He has been referred to as the “Alexander Hamilton of the new administration”, but no one sees’s him doing anything compared to writing the Federalist papers, for Father-in-law Donald. Jared is given leadership positions on issues such as brokering peace in the Middle East, reforming the criminal justice system, and running the American office of innovation, reforming veteran care, tackling the opioid epidemic and revamp the entire federal government. This seems like a lot to do because it is. Almost a majority of the president’s duties have fallen on Jared, and are beginning to fall on Ivanka too, as we see her sitting in on the G20 meeting.
Many say that they are relieved that Ivanka and Jared have such important roles in the new GOP as they are the new hands of reason. This brings up the question of: why is the general public relieved that President Trump’s children are in the White House, and shouldn’t he be dealing with a majority of these issues, such as revamping the federal government, by himself. His children’s presence in the White House also leaves Trump up to liability as he may still have a connection to his businesses which he used to be president of. He states “I have Ivanka and Eric and Don sitting there. … I wouldn’t ever be involved because I wouldn’t care about anything but our country”, but now Ivanka is his assistant within the White House, as well as running Trump industries.
With a radical president like Trump, many feel his actions are being guided by his children, and are making the right choices on which to carry out, or not. The poise and restraint that Jared and Ivanka are demonstrating, are apparently guiding the White House in a diplomatic direction but it is hard to see as President Trump is making such drastic actions on thing such as Planned Parenthood, which Ivanka does support.
In the new GOP, we are seeing the epitome of Trump branding, as the Trump family continues to seep its influence on today’s politics. As we hope that the new advisors surrounding Trump will guide him in the right direction we the people are still left to question, is this clear nepotism too much for the White House today, and do the Trump children have too much influence?
