Say Hello to Hollywood’s Golden Thirties With: The Last Tycoon

The Last Tycoon, written and directed by Billy Ray and based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1933 unfinished novel, takes place between the Roaring ’20s, the Great Depression and the Golden Thirties.

The story is centered around Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer), who is based on the life of the movie mogul Irving Thalberg. Monroe is a rising executive competing against his own mentor Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer), who having come from the streets and lived a life full of sorrow, has no intention of returning to his misfortune and is determined to make the studio successful no matter what he has to sacrifice in terms of morality. As People Magazine states, “Monroe navigates the cutthroat world of aging execs, enterprising ingenues, and tireless paparazzi — all while clad in the stiff but timeless menswear of the ’30s.”
