The Newest Neutral in Fashion: Gender
Fashion evolves with the times. The industry is always on top of trends and forecasting future ones. With the concept of gender slowly becoming more fluid in society, the fashion industry is gradually taking on the task of blurring the line between gender and clothing.
With stars like Jaden Smith sporting fashion-forward skirts, Ruby Rose promoting the concept of gender fluidity, and many other celebrities challenging the gender roles of garments, Hollywood is being taken by storm with the trend. Top designers in the fashion industry have been having a field day with this concept, and androgynous styles were all over the runway during New York Fashion Week. Some of the most raved about shows of the recent fashion week included men in dresses and skirts and women in suits and oxfords. Public School, Balenciaga, and Gucci were just some of the designers that channeled this trend in their Fall 2017 Ready-To-Wear shows and they were extremely successful.
We should celebrate the fashion industry taking a step towards breaking gender roles, but we have to ask ourselves if the industry is doing this for the right reasons. As much as everyone would like to believe that this movement is motivated by an urge for political correctness, some people believe that the fashion industry may be using the rise in acceptance of the LGBTQ, agender and gender fluid community to create an increase in sales. Looking back over time, the fashion industry is always adapting to current highlights in order to make a profit.
We hope that the industry’s intentions are good, because either way, they are shedding a light on a very important topic. Recent events have made us aware how dangerous it is to be different in today’s world. With social media making it open season for criticism of others who aren’t like them and talk of hate crimes and murders of trans people, society should be very conscious of the issues that people face today. Fashion is one the most influential and profitable industries world wide, so representation in this business is very important for the community.
